A disruptive presence in the footwear industry, ROA was founded upon a hybrid relationship to the landscape. We partnered with the Milan-based brand to kick off their latest series covering environmental conservation within grassroots communities, beginning with two distinct stories in Japan.
We documented two very different stories in both Central & Southern Japan, each united by a common care for the landscape through community participation. Starting with Noyaki, the controlled burning of ancestral grasslands in Minamioguni⏤featuring the volunteers, their equipment and process.
Next we traveled to Isumi in Chiba prefecture to explore the landscape of the region's makers and growers⏤coming together in support of our friend Tomohiro Kaji's newest venture, Kishu Ann. An auberge built in his Grandfathers home, the project unites and celebrates the resources of the area and the craftsmanship that brings it together.
